Altmetrics on Bloomsbury Collections
Altmetrics are now available for all titles on Bloomsbury Collections. Altmetric badges and data are tracked on all content on the platform, providing users with quick access to online attention information.
Altmetrics are a simple and effective way of understanding who is engaging with research online and what they’re saying, beyond traditional bibliometrics such as citation and download counts. Sources tracked include news, blogs, policy documents, clinical guidelines, syllabi, social media, and more.
This suite of metrics gives authors and readers a more comprehensive overview of the impact of the leading scholarship on Bloomsbury Collections.
Behind the scenes, at Bloomsbury we’ll be using these metrics to inform platform development and marketing activity.
The Altmetric Attention Score is visible for each title on Bloomsbury Collections that has at least one mention tracked. The Attention Score shows how much attention each book has received and is calculated based on three main factors:
- Volume – How many mentions the book receives; only one mention per person per source is counted.
- Sources – Each type of mention has standard weighting that contributes to the score.
- Authors – The author of each mention is examined for frequency of mentions, audience, and bias.
Users can click on each Altmetric badge to pull up a detailed report of shares and mentions, view a timeline of attention, and sign up to receive updates by email.
Open Access Book Metrics
For our open access titles, download and view counters are also available.
The download counters record the total number of times an individual book has been downloaded from all Bloomsbury’s publishing platforms. Chapter downloads can be viewed on chapter pages and are not aggregated into full-book download counts.
On chapter pages, the views counter records the total number of times any chapter full-text page has been accessed on all Bloomsbury's publishing platforms since the title was published.
Both metrics reflect access across all Bloomsbury’s publishing platforms. For example, the same title may be hosted on both Bloomsbury Collections and a subject platform such as Bloomsbury Education and Childhood Studies, in which case the downloads and views counters will each reflect the combined activity on both environments.
